Queer-Affirming Therapy for Shame, Intimacy & Life Changes
Welcome. You might be navigating a major life transition, carrying the weight of grief or shame with yourself or in relationships, or questioning who you are and what you truly want, wherever you are on your journey, I’m glad you’re here. I offer a supportive, affirming space to slow down, reconnect and "(re)discover yourself.
I specialize working with adults, particularly those a part of the LGBTQIA+ community, who are moving through moments of uncertainty, change, or emotional overwhelm. Together, we’ll make room for what’s been silenced, explore the patterns and choices that shape you, and move toward something more honest and aligned with you and your life.
“And the day came when the risk to remain tight in a bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom.” ― Anaïs Nin
Hello, I’m James
My Background: I’m a licensed psychotherapist (LMFT #154299) based in Los Angeles, California. Before becoming a therapist, I grew up on a farm in the Midwest and then spent a large part of my adult life working in public relations and human resources for tech start-ups and in educational technology. That winding path shapes the way I work: grounded, relational, and deeply curious about the stories we tell ourselves from our past and the ones we’re still unfolding.
My Training: My clinical training began at The Ness Counseling Center, where I provided low-fee therapy to individuals, couples, and families in collaboration with the Department of Children and Family Services. I’ve also served as a grief group facilitator at Our House Grief Support Center, and I’m currently part of the Beyond Psychology Center’s psychotherapist network. I completed my associate training under Michelle Seely, LMFT #41680, whose work in relational Gestalt and Jungian analysis continues to inform my approach.
My Education: I hold a Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, with concentrations in art, history, and Spanish, from the University of Nebraska and a Master’s in Counseling (Marriage and Family Therapy emphasis) from California State University, Northridge.
I currently provide in-person mental health treatment in Los Angeles and offer virtual sessions for clients throughout California via Telehealth.

What Working Together Might Look Like
Therapy with me is grounded in presence and trust. We’ll move at a pace that feels right for you, meeting whatever arises with curiosity. My goal is to create a space where you feel safe, supported, and understood especially when it comes to the deeper, more complex parts of your life and identity.
I integrate therapeutic approaches such as Relational Gestalt, Attachment Theory, Internal Family Systems (IFS), Jungian analysis, Somatic Experiencing, Hakomi, and Acceptance-Based Psychotherapy. These modalities support a deep, curious exploration of identity, relationships, and life’s complexities. Here’s what our work might include:
We start with what’s present
Rather than focusing only on the past, we begin with what you're experiencing right now. This means emotionally, physically, and relationally. We’ll pay close attention to the patterns that show up in your thoughts, relationships, and body, especially in moments of anxiety, shutdown, or disconnection.
We explore the parts of you that show up in stress
You might notice parts of yourself that seek control, want to please, withdraw, or feel deeply overwhelmed. These parts usually developed for a reason, even if they no longer serve you. Together, we’ll get to know them. The work is not to get rid of them, but to understand what they’re trying to protect and what they might need instead.
We ask questions that have been quieted
Whether you're grieving, questioning your identity, or wrestling with desire and connection, we will create space to ask the harder questions: Who am I now? What do I want? What am I afraid of? Together, we’ll listen for the deeper meaning underneath what’s been hard to name.
We work through the body, not just the mind
I integrate somatic (body-based) practices to help you slow down and feel more grounded. Sometimes the body holds what words cannot. As a result, we will work towards tuning into sensations, e.g. tightness in the chest, a lump in the throat, a sudden stillness. That awareness will help you gain insight into what’s happening beneath the surface and furthermore, help facilitate more self-trust and space to make different decisions and choices.
We create space for queer experiences and liberation
Many therapy models weren’t built with queer lives in mind. My approach honors and integrates LGBTQIA+ experiences, recognizing how shame, resilience, identity, and longing often intersect in ways traditional therapy can miss.
We aim to move toward clarity and choice
The goal isn’t perfection or “fixing” yourself, rather it’s deeper self-trust. Over time, therapy can help you feel more grounded in who you are, clearer about what matters, and more able to meet life’s challenges with compassion and agency.
My practice is rooted in queer-affirmative therapy and is sex-positive, kink-aware, and allied with ethical and consensual non-monogamy. I’m committed to ongoing consciousness in my work, creating a space where intersecting identities — including race, gender, sexuality, and class — are recognized, honored, and explored with care.

Clinical Interests
In my practice, I specialize in helping individuals, especially those that are a part of the LGBTQIA+ community, navigate key areas that are essential for thriving in today’s complex world. My work often supports people facing challenges around:
Relationships and Intimacy
I help individuals build healthier, more fulfilling connections with partners, family, friends, and themselves. Together, we explore emotional patterns, communication styles, attachment dynamics, and desires. This includes identifying what you want in relational and sexual intimacy, recognizing what’s been shaped by anxiety or shame, and clarifying how you’d like to move forward with greater awareness.
Ethical Non-Monogamy & Open Relationships
I work with individuals practicing consensual and ethical non-monogamy or polyamory. Together, we explore emotional needs, boundaries, and the impact of jealousy, attachment, and projections—building trust and clarity in complex relational systems.
Anxiety & Stress
I help clients reduce chronic stress, manage overthinking, and work with panic, social anxiety, or general day-to-day anxiety that may be disrupting their life. We explore both immediate tools and deeper causes to bring clarity and confidence in helping meet anxiety and understanding it’s way of protecting and where that it may no longer helpful.
Grief & Loss
Grief therapy can support healing from the death of a loved one, breakups, or major life transitions. I offer a grounded space to move through sadness, numbness, anger, and meaning-making at your own pace, moving forward with care and honoring that which has ended.
Gender Identity and Expression & Sexual Orientation
I provide affirming LGBTQIA+ therapy for those exploring or deepening their relationship to gender identity and expression as well as those experiencing stressors related to their sexual orientation. Whether you're coming out, transitioning, or questioning, we’ll create a space rooted in curiosity, affirmation, and safety.

I have a deep clinical interest and evolving specialization in grief and loss, LGBTQIA+ issues, relationships, identity and sexuality, and life transitions. Furthermore, I find engaging in the exploration of existential stress that often comes with such challenges and experiences to be of increasing value to clients in therapy.

I currently do not work with any insurance companies, however, clients who wish to use insurance for their therapy will be provided with a monthly statement that may be used to submit a claim for out of network coverage.

The length of therapy varies from person to person. Typically, we start by engaging in weekly sessions and may adjust to every other week or monthly session, depending on how we feel about the therapy progress. However, we will discuss this in collaboration during our initial session and will continue to check in on this topic throughout our work together.
-
I work with a variety of people, including adults, older adults, emerging adults, teens and couples. As a queer-identifying clinician, I also enjoy working with individuals who are part of the LGBTQIA+ community and the challenges of such intersections, including identity and sexuality, stress, relationships, and depression, among others.
-
I have clients that prefer in-person therapy and others that prefer online. As a result, I see clients in person in Toluca Lake, California and online via telehealth throughout the state of California.
-
We'll schedule a 15-30 minute consultation to determine if we're a good match. We'll discuss your therapy goals and how I can support you before deciding to move forward. If we do, we'll collaborate on the initial session details so that you feel confident in our future work together.
